The SRV school was established in the year 1844 with Mr. Kelly, an Englishman, as the first teacher. In the beginning, the school was called "Cochin Raja's School" by an Order by the then Diwan of Cochin Shri. Shankara Warrier, as it was established by the Maharaja of erstwhile Cochin State. In the year 1865, the name of the school was changed to "H.H The Raja School" and Mr. A.F Sceily was appointed as the first Head Master who played a very admirable role in the development of School in its early days.
In the year 1688, the first batch of the students wrote the matriculation exam of Madras University. As the first batch of students scored jubilant victory in the examinations, the then Maharaja decided to construct a new building for the school and the new building was inaugurated on the 26th of July 1870. In the year 1875, the school was upgraded to 2nd grade college and merged itself with the Madras University by appointing Mr. Sceily himself as the Principal of new college. The golden jubilee of the upgraded college was celebrated in the year 1925 in a ceremonial manner in the presence of the Maharaja and the Diwan. In the same year, the name of the institution was changed to Maharajas College.
As the number of students and teachers swelled, it became necessary to shift the school from the college campus. The present building as constructed in the year 1934 in a property donated by the karakkatt family. Mr. K. Raman Menon MLA.Litt. was the first Head Master of the school after its relocation. In the year 1989, the vocational higher secondary department also started in the school.
The SRV School which had contributed great personalities at national and international level, celebrated its 150th anniversary in good manner in 1995. In the year 2000, the School also started the Higher Secondary Division.
